TERVETULOA HEIMON KOTISIVULLE

Olen sukututkimusta harrastava forssalainen sukututkija.

Suomalaisia kohtasi kaikkien aikojen suurin luonnononnettomuus Yhdysvalloissa 12.10.1918 eli Minnesotan palo.

Canadian Pasific -yhtiön ylpeys The Empress of Ireland törmäsi sumussa St. Lawrence -joella norjalaiseen hiililaiva Storstadiin tuhoisin seurauksin.

WELCOME TO HEIMO’S HOMEPAGE

I am a genealogist from Forssa. My particular interest are stories of American Finns in their new homeland. I have studied the Finnish emigrants in U.S.A. from my birth municipality and its surroundings for decades. As a result I have now done thirty-five separate trips to U.S.A. to study their history.

The Finnish U.S. emigrants faced their worst disaster of all time in the Minnesota fire (10.12.1918). For the first time in 100 years, the origin of the Finns who died in the fire, and as the only country, has been found through years of work.

Two years after the sinking of the ”Titanic" happened yet an another tragic maritime accident, which caused even more casualties as Finns as passengers than the ”Titanic". Canadian Pacific company's flagship "The Empress of Ireland" collided in the fog with the Norwegian coal ship ”Storstaden"on the St. Lawrence river with disastrous results. The ship had 1477 passengers. 1012 people drowned in the accident and of which 94 were Finns (22 were rescued). Their birth records have not been clarified for 102 years. After over two years of 24/7 work, the result is that Finns are now, for the first time, only victims of accident to be determined with the accuracy of birth data.
